Summit Stewards are an important part of Poke-O-Moonshine. Each year thousands of visitors to the mountain are welcomed and educated by the Stewards. Poke-O-Moonshine has had Summer Summit Stewards since 2002. Before that Fire Observers manned the tower from 1912 to 1988. To view a list of the Fire Observers during that time  Click Here
  1. Kyle Pendell 2016
Hey everybody, my name is Kyle Pendell. I am an environmental studies and biology student at SUNY Potsdam. I interned on Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain during the summer of 2016. I had a great time working in the fire tower talking to hikers about a number of different topics! The people I came across this summer made standing around on the summit well worth it. David and the Friends of Poke-O were very helpful throughout the summer and I appreciate the opportunity very much!
  2. Lauren Stafford - 2015
Hi my name is Lauren Stafford and I am from Manhattan in NYC! I interned at Poke-O-Moonshine in 2015 as the fire tower steward and I had the most amazing time. It was wonderful getting to speak to everyone and teach the public about the history of the Adirondack Park and Poke-O-Moonshine! It helped inspire me to obtain my masters in science because I loved getting to work with people of all ages and answering the interesting and fun questions I was asked!
  3. Kelly Glascott - 2014
  4. Patrick Creagh - 2013
I graduated SUNY Potsdam spring 2014 with a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies and minors in Therapeutic Recreation and Outdoor education. I worked as a Fire Tower Steward at Poke-O-Moonshine in the summer of 2013.
  5. Zebulin Edwards - 2012/2013
  6. Mark Connelly - 2011
  7. Ian Mauhs - 2011
I worked the first half of Summer 2011 on top of the Fire Tower. The first part of the summer was particularly rainy, and for a few days I didn't see anyone, but this is when the animals became more active. I will never forget the time when a family of grouse swept through my campsite, and when I saw a black bear down the jeep trail. I'm very thankful for the opportunity to work at Poke-O-Moonshine. I'm now settled in Asheville, North Carolina, working as a Wilderness Therapy Instructor in the Appalachian Mountains.
  8. Tim Petrashune - 2010
  9. Alex Raynor - 2009
Hello, My name is Alex Raynor. I graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 2011 with a Major in Environmental Studies and a Minor in Wilderness Education. I loved my time spent living on top of Poke-O-Moonshine in the summer of 2010 while I worked as a summit steward. It was an unforgettable experience that has not yet been matched in kind! The "Friends of Poke-O-Moonshine" were an especially awesome group to work with!
  10. Brian Wittmer - 2009
  11. Adam Latacki - 2009
  12. R.J. Thayer - 2008
My experience on Poke-O-Moonshine was life changing. Working as a steward for two months, living in nature really provided me the opportunity to understand the world around me better. My body cycle began tuning into the natural cycle, waking with the sunrise and bed with the sunset. Being connected to the world around you, means more then just using the internet, it means going out and experiencing those things that make us who we are.
  13. Kevin Chlad - 2007
  14. Eric Bouchard - 2007
High atop of Mount Poke-O-Moonshine in the summer of 2007 was most certainly an experience to be remembered. While in the process of preparing for my Senior Service Learning Experience the semester previous with Professor Wilson, it was mentioned that there would be an adjustment period. This would be a span of time in which one would be alone, completely and utterly alone for hours sometimes days on end. It was something that didn’t sound too difficult at face value, but is odd in reality.
  15. Ryan Ducharme - 2006
  16. Dan Collididge - 2006
  17. Brendan Wiltse - 2004/2005
Working on Poke-O-Moonshine, especially under the leadership of David Thomas-Train, solidified my desire to study and preserve wild places. Those summers gave me the opportunity to connect with a place and the people that use it. I enjoyed meeting and interacting with the hikers as much as watching the Peregrine Falcons hunting over the surrounding forest each morning. Since working on Poke-O I graduated from Paul Smiths College with a degree in Field Biology and am currently working on a Ph.D. in Limnology at Queen's University.
  18. Miranda Bell - 2017
My name is Miranda Bell and I am a SUNY Potsdam Student from Cadyville, NY, majoring in environmental studies with two minors in wilderness education and writing. I had an absolutely amazing time educating the public on the mountain’s ecological, human, and natural history while gaining experience with an internship in my field. This summer was the 100 year anniversary of Poke-O-Moonshine’s fire tower as well as the 20th anniversary of the group that started it all, Friends of Poke-O-Moonshine, making for a very exciting season on the mountain!”
